The collection consists of 460 photographs, collected or photographed by Thomas Spencer, of buildings and other sites which possess some connection to the Civil War. The majority of the photographs were taken in Georgia, with some from Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Many of the buildings depicted in the photographs served as headquarters of one or both armies.

The collection consists of papers of Margaret Davis Cate from 1890-1964. The papers include correspondence; printed material; research notes pertaining to the history of Sea Island, St. Simons Island, and Ft. Frederica, Georgia; photographs; and ledgers (1926-1935) containing information about her poultry business. Of particular interest is correspondence between Cate and fellow historians including E.M. Coulter and Kenneth Colemen; correspondence with archaeologist Charles Fairbanks relating to the preservation of Ft. Frederica; and letters between Cate, John Marsh, and Margaret Mitchell Marsh. The collection also contains records relating to Cate's personal genealogical research.

This collection contains land grants, legal papers, farm records, photographs, correspondence, and artifacts documenting the history of the farm on which the Shields and Ethridge families ran from Colonial settlement through the 20th Century. Included are plats of the farm as it grew, photographs of daily operations, business receipts reflecting the changing times, and a variety of manuals and catalogs of farm implements as the farm became more mechanized. There are many identified photographs, mainly from the 1920s, recording family trips, farm operations, and portraits.

Correspondence forms the largest portion of the collection: letters among Haynes family members, letters between the Haynes family and their friends, and business letters of the Haynes family. The business correspondence is mainly with William G. Haynes, Jr. concerning his Ashantilly Press and his environmental interests. Most of the publications by Ashantilly Press are represented in the collection either by unbound copies, manuscript proofs, printing expenses, or illustrations. Subjects include Ida Hilton Public Library in Darien where Frances and Natalie worked, Pape School in Savannah where Anne Lee worked as an art teacher, Florida State University where Frances worked as a librarian, First Presbyterian Church where the family attended and Bill printed the bulletins, Hofwyl-Broadfield plantation where the Dent family (friends of the Haynes') lived, other private presses, historic sites and houses in the Darien area, and the Altamaha River and its preservation.
